June’s Monthly Giveaway

Congratulations to Bobbie Dotson who won the Babykicks Deluxe Pocket Diaper from the May giveaway!  For June we have one of our most beloved products, the Undercover Mama.

Part nursing tank, part nursing shirt, the Undercover Mama has quite obviously been invented by a real breastfeeding mom.  It’s basically a tube top that comes up higher in the front and attaches – either with the clips or with the stretchy loops – to your nursing bra.  So when you unclip your bra to fold the cup down and nurse, the Undercover Mama comes down with it.  When you wear it under another shirt (or a cute cardigan), it makes any shirt a nursing shirt.  Just pull up the top layer (your shirt), pull down the inner layer (the Undercover Mama) and you can nurse while your belly and sides are completely covered.

Two other uses I have found for the Undercover Mama are for pregnancy and for modesty.  When I was 9 months pregnant, in January, most maternity shirts were not long enough to go all the way around my very pregnant belly, and it was distinctly uncomfortable to feel a cold draft on my middle!  The Undercover Mamas were long enough though that they could pull all the way down, keeping me warm and adding a cute layered look.  Also, I frequently will layer a camisole under a shirt with a low neckline for modesty.  The problem is that the camisole always starts to kind of sag down by the end of the day (gosh, I don’t know why, what with all the little kids in my house pulling on and twisting my clothes!) and so by about 3 pm the cami isn’t covering much up.  The Undercover Mama, though, because it attaches to my bra straps, is held close to my body by those same straps, which are MADE to be pretty heavy-duty, not-getting-stretched-out straps.  Then I’m not afraid to bend over like I am with a regular cami.

The winner will get an Undercover Mama in their choice of in-stock size AND color (black, white, cream, brown, hot pink, or gray, value $24.95).  If you don’t win, or don’t want to wait till July to find out if you won, you can get your own you can stop by our store any Tuesday 10-2 or Saturday 11-3, or click on this link to buy from our website: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/undercover-mama-nursing-tank.html

Three Ways To Enter:

1. Stop by the store and fill out an entry form. You can enter every time you visit this month!

2. Add the item “Monthly Giveaway” to your cart with any online order this month.

3. Comment here and tell me what breastfeeding accessory needs to be invented.  Chocolate-scented nipple cream?  The perfect breastmilk-spitup stain remover?  A perfectly breathable nursing cover?  What do you wish you had?  (I know mine: a self-filling giant water bottle!)

Oh and by the way I figure I should let y’all know that we are not compensated in any way for these giveaways.  Sometimes companies will donate items for the giveaway, other times, like this month’s giveaway, this is just a product that we really, really like and have decided to give away out of our own pocket.

May Giveaway – Bravado Nursing Tank

Thank you to all who participated in last month’s giveaway of the hands-free pumping bustier.  I’m a little embarrassed to say that I have forgotten the winner’s name, so I can’t congratulate her personally here, but Winner, the bustier is on its way, along with the online order you placed.

This month’s giveaway has been sponsored by the folks at Bravado.  As you may know, we carry two of their nursing bras in the store (the Original and the Body Silk Seamless).  This month, as the weather is heating up, we’ll be giving away a Bravado nursing tank in your choice of color and size!

Bravado Nursing Tank comes in several fabulous colors!

As a nursing mom, I love that this tank has a real, honest-to-goodness bra built in.  The problem I have with generic nursing tanks is that their sizing is just S-M-L.  So I can get a Small to get the correct band size, but then there is nowhere near enough fabric (or support).  Or I can get  a Large so I’m covered, but then the band size is much too big and again, there is no support.  The Bravado tank avoids these problems.  Not only do I wear them with skirts and shorts in the summer, but I had one that I matched with a swimsuit bottom and voila! I had a nursing tankini swimsuit.

See more info and photos here: http://www.bravadodesigns.com/shop/the-essential-nursing-tank

There are three ways to enter:

1. Stop by our store during the month of May and fill out an entry slip.

2. Place an online order through May 31.

3. Comment here and let me know whether you would consider buying this tank if we carried it (or if you already own it), and what color you hope to win.

Winner will be chosen during the first week of June.

First-hand Breastfeeding Product Reviews

I am so excited that I finally get to give some first-hand reviews of the breastfeeding products we carry!  By the time I took over running Babies Bottoms and More two years ago (hooray!) my then-youngest was already about a year old, so although I was still nursing her, I was past the early breastfeeding days when most challenges occur.  But now, nursing a newborn, I get to experience the soreness, leaking, and every-two-hours nursing… and see which products are my favorite for coping with those things!

Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter

Natural Nipple Butter by Earth Mama Angel Baby

This nipple butter is AWESOME.  I had always been a fan of lanolin creams before and wasn’t sure how this lanolin-free plant-based cream would work.  Well, I’m here to tell you how it works: way better than lanolin!  Since it’s made with plant oils, it is just barely solid at room temperature and turns to liquid pretty much as soon as it touches your skin.  What this means for your tender skin is that it glides on with none of the stickiness of lanolin and hardly any rubbing in necessary.  I’ve also discovered that it washes out of my nursing bras and pajamas cleanly, with none of the staining that lanolin causes.  Get yours here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/emabnipplebutter.html

Bravado Original Nursing Bra:

Bravado Original Nursing Bra (Regular, also comes in Plus and Double Plus)

This was another one I wasn’t sure of.  I prefer more structured, “prettier” bras and wasn’t sure this one would give me adequate support, so I only bought one of these style.  Let me tell you, when my milk came in at 3 days postpartum, I grew about 2 sizes and this was the ONLY one of all the nursing bras I had purchased that still fit me comfortably.  And I know from unfortunate past experience that wearing a too-small nursing bra is a recipe for disaster – disaster in the form of mastitis, a breast infection which makes you feel like you have the flu.  I quickly swiped a second Bravado Original Nursing Bra from the store, and have been wearing one, washing one for the past week and a half.  I hope that eventually I’ll get down to a size that I can wear some of the other prettier nursing bras I bought, but for now, with my cup size changing literally by the hour, this is by far the most comfortable one and the only one I’ll wear.  Get yours here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/bravado-original-nursing-bra.html (for B-C cup sizes), here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/bravado-original-nursing-bra-plus.html (for C-E cup sizes), or here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/bravado-original-nursing-bra-double-plus.html (for DD-G cup sizes).  For more detailed sizing info, click on any of the above links and scroll down to the bottom of the listing.

Finally, I just want to give a shout-out to My Brest Friend.  I’m out of time to say why I like it  WAAAAAY better than the Boppy, but it’s great.  Come by the store and try one on and you’ll see why!  Or order yours here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/my-brest-friend-nursing-pillow.html or here for the deluxe version: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/my-brest-friend-deluxe-nursing-pillow.html

New Breastfeeding Products!

We are happy to announce that Babies Bottoms and More has officially expanded our selection of breastfeeding supplies!  While at the ABC show in Las Vegas this past October, Candis and I (Elisa) spent three days in the biggest convention center we had ever seen, looking for the best breastfeeding products out there.  Which wasn’t hard – we just asked ourselves which products we thought would make OUR lives easier as nursing moms.  Here are some of our new products in stock. (Currently in-store but not yet on the website.)

Bravado Nursing Bras – designed specifically to be both practical AND attractive, Bravado is at the forefront of nursing bra design.  We are currently carrying their Original Nursing Bra  and the Microfiber Nursing Bra in all sizes.  We even have a dressing area in the store now where you can come during the week and try them on to find out exactly what size fits you best.

Bebe au Lait nursing covers – You asked for these, and we listened!  Available in 16 hip prints, the Bebe au Lait covers feature a stiff neck opening that holds itself away from your body, so you can see your baby and your baby can see you, while still covering you from strangers’ view.  I’m excited about trying mine out at my sister’s wedding, just 10 days after my due date in January.

Lansinoh – I have used their milk storage bags, lanolin, and breast pads for years, so we’re happy to be able to offer these products to our customers.  Currently we have the Lansinoh Affinity double electric breast pump and the breastmilk storage bags in stock.  At around $150, the Lansinoh pump costs significantly less than the $350 for a Medela double electric pump.

My Brest Friend – At the ABC show, Candis and I got a chance to “try on” the My Brest Friend nursing pillow and nursing footstool.  We were hooked!  I’ll never use a Boppy again – and when I got home and checked online reviews, My Brest Friend consistently got the best reviews of any nursing pillow on the market.  Their nursing stool is great too – it’s an angled wooden stool to hold your feet in the most comfortable nursing position, but when your baby is weaned the angled top lays flat and it becomes a step stool, perfect for a toddler who can’t quite reach the bathroom sink!

Do you have another favorite nursing product?  Share it with us in the comments and if we start carrying it, we’ll give the first person who suggested it a free one (or $25 off, whichever is less).

Nursing Notes from a Mom

Now that we’ve gone through all the types of cloth diapers, I thought it was time to talk about breastfeeding.  Today I don’t want to talk about the benefits of breastfeeding (there are MANY) or the technical aspects (best to call a lactation consultant for specific problems), I just want to talk a little bit about my experiences as a nursing mom.

In the store this Saturday a customer asked me about the purpose of breast pads, which got us started talking about nursing bras, and she said it was good to hear the little details.

Nursing Pads

Breast pads, or nursing pads, are absorbent pads to put inside your bra to catch any leaking milk.  No, your body will not be leaking milk all the time!  But when something triggers your milk to “let down”, they will start to leak in preparation for feeding your baby.  Letdown can be triggered by it being “time to nurse” – if my baby nurses on average every 2 hours, my breasts get in this rhythm.  It can also be triggered by thoughts of your baby or hearing a crying baby (even one that is not yours!)  It’s amazing how well mothers bodies respond to their babies.  Even more strange, I always knew my baby was about to wake up because my milk would let down – even if she was sleeping in the other room and I hadn’t heard a sound yet!

So, back to nursing pads.  Some are purely absorbent, like our hemp nursing pads, while others have a waterproof PUL backing.  I prefer the waterproof ones for during the day or when I’m out of the house, to make sure my shirt doesn’t get wet.  I like the ones without a waterproof barrier for when I’m at home and especially at night time.  They are more breathable, and at nighttime I don’t really care if I get a spot of milk on my pajamas, I just don’t want to wake up in a puddle of milk!

Nursing Bras

Good nursing bras are also important.  I got mastitis THREE TIMES before Claire turned 6 months old, and each time I can trace the cause back to wearing a bra that did not fit.  An ill-fitting bra can put pressure on your breast tissue, preventing your breast from being completely emptied out during a nursing session.  This can lead to a plugged duct, which can get infected and lead to mastitis.  It was sooooo tempting for me to try to squeeze into my pre-pregnancy bras because they were so pretty.  Finally I realized what was happening and invested in some good, supportive nursing bras that fit me well.

I’d suggest starting out with 2 nursing bras and purchasing these in the third trimester.  Remember that your breast size will increase once your milk comes in (about 2-4 days after your baby’s birth), so get comfortable, stretchy bras.  Then after your baby is about a week old, you can re-measure yourself and figure out what size you are.  At this point I suggest purchasing 2-4 more nursing bras.  Babies Bottoms and More does not currently carry nursing bras (as of September 2010) but we hope to in the future.  For now, here are some brands and links of nursing bras that I have found to be good ones:

http://www.bravadodesigns.com/ has lots of great breastfeeding info plus a great selection of nursing bras in ALL sizes.  These bras are designed to be nursing bras, not just regular bras with a nursing clip added on, but that doesn’t mean they’re not pretty, which I really like.  Their Original Nursing Bra is a great one to have on hand before your baby is born.  Another stretchy, comfortable nursing bra is the Carriwell Seamless Organic Cotton nursing bra.  We plan to carry this bra in-stock by January 2011.

Carriwell Seamless Organic Nursing Bra

Another brand I like is Medela.  I have several of their underwire nursing bras.  Normally, as a nursing mom, you need to stay away from underwires as they are more likely to lead to plugged ducts, but Medela makes their underwires differently to reduce that risk.  I like the support an underwire gives and the fact that when I’m wearing this bra, my clothes all fit normally.  Click on the link to see it here: http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/products/intimate-apparel/325/seamless-underwire-nursing-bra-nude

And finally, a nursing bra company that I have just discovered, HOTmilk!  How many of you mamas have ever seen nursing and maternity bras in black satin, royal blue sheer mesh, or red lace?  I didn’t think so!  HOTmilk has all of these and more, in a full range of sizes beyond the normal A-D cups.

Nipple Creams

As your body gets used to nursing a baby during the first 4-6 weeks, your nipples will be tender and might need a little extra care.  Nipple creams like Earth Mama Angel Baby’s Natural Nipple Butter (link to purchase: http://www.babiesbottomsandmore.com/emabnipplebutter.html) are so soothing.  Whatever cream you choose, make sure that it is food-grade, because you don’t want to have to wash it off before every feeding.  Remember, breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt, so if you are experiencing true pain, please call a lactation consultant, but if you’re just experiencing a little tenderness or chapping, a nipple cream can help tide you through.  You’ll only need it for the first 4-6 weeks in most cases.
