Congratulations, everyone!  This is normally the part where I tell you what this month’s giveaway will be, but my 2 year old got into the super awesome nontoxic nail polish that it was going to be and mixed all the colors of nail polish together.  So give me a few days or a week to figure out if I can get replacements in time or if there’s something else around here that I should give away and save the nontoxic nail polish for another month.  And if you have a similar story to share in the comments so I don’t feel like my kid is the only toddler whose mission it is to use up every single last drop of Mommys’s sanity, that would be much appreciated!  Hey, just goes to show why it’s important to have nontoxic nail polish, right?

November Giveaway – Amber Teething Necklace

Congratulations to Lori P whose name was drawn in our October giveaway. Congratulations Lori, your name was picked! To claim your Be Quick, please email admin@babiesbottomsandmore.com or call 972.424.4994 before Wednesday, November 7 at 9 pm. Thanks!

This month we’re giving away a perennial favorite – an amber teething necklace from Healing Amber. This 13″ necklace features multicolored polished chunks of amber for your little one. The thread is knotted in between each bead so that even if the thread breaks, all the beads but one will stay strung to reduce choking hazards. The clasp is designed to break under pressure as a safety precaution. Amber necklaces, though they are often called “teething necklaces” are not meant to be chewed on. In fact, with a proper fit, the necklace should be long enough that you can easily slip two fingers in between the necklace and your little one’s neck, but not long enough for them to get it in their mouth.

From Healing Amber’s website:

Used for centuries, Baltic Amber has been used for a variety of ailments from teething pain to arthritis. Scientific research has shown that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. It improves immunity and the balance of acids when absorbed into the bloodstream, it stimulates the thyroid glands to help reduce drooling and soothe inflammed areas. Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognised by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic (pain reliever), which can help to relieve many painful conditions.

Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, accelerates the healing of wounds, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach infections and respiratory disease. Amber is unique and has amazing results which are all natural. Baltic Amber is a traditional European baby teething remedy which has become popular all over the world.

Safety Disclaimer ~ please don’t leave children unattended with their necklace or bracelet, it may present a choking hazard.

At first, I thought all these moms who swore by amber necklaces were crazy. The necklaces were pretty, sure, and kinda cute to see on a baby, but thought it sounded a little far-fetched. I wasn’t even convinced when I put a necklace on my son and noticed his fussiness calm down, because I thought I could just be imagining it. But then I got the mother-of-all-cricks in my neck. For three days, I would stretch and massage my neck and get about half of it worked out by bedtime… and then I’d wake up each morning and it would be back in all its crampiness. I was not a joy to be around those three days, I was grumpy and cranky because I was in pain. On the third night I thought “I can’t take this any more!” and grabbed an amber necklace, put it on, and fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning, my neck still hurt – but not any more than it had when I went to bed! As I went through the day, I noticed that although the pain was still noticeable and I still couldn’t turn my head fully to one side, it wasn’t severe enough to be making me grumpy. It was just there. The pain lessened each day as I wore the necklace 24 hours a day, and after a few more days it was gone.

Fast forward a couple weeks and one lady in the store really wanted a Molasses amber necklace like the one I was wearing, but we were sold out of that color. I offered to order it, but she needed it to help with migraines and understandably didn’t want to wait, so I sold her the one off my neck. That night I ordered more, including another molasses one for me because I love the way the warm black of the amber sets off the warm white of my pearl earrings, I didn’t want a diferent color. Two days later, two days of not wearing amber, the pain in my neck was back. I pulled a necklace off the shelf and put it on and again, 24 hours later the pain was almost gone.

If you’d like your own amber necklace, either for pain relief or because they’re a beautiful, 100% natural alternative to mass produced costume jewelry, we have them in the store. Child necklaces range from $18.99 – $22.00 and adult necklaces are $29.99. All our amber is sourced from reputable distributors and manufacturers so you can be assured you are getting genuine Baltic amber and not plastic, glass, or dried (not fossilized) tree sap substitutes which do not share genuine amber’s healing properties.

Child amber bracelets and necklaces can also be purchased through our website here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/knteam.html

FOUR ways to enter this month!

1. Comment here and tell us your favorite kind of amber. Do you like the clarity and sparkle of the light yellow Liquid Gold? Prefer the beach-baby vibe of the Raw (unpolished) amber or the cool sophistication of strings of shiny black Molasses? Do you lose yourself in the warm Maple Syrup color, or are you transfixed by the unique cracks and flecks in the Olive Speckle beads?

2. Share this blog entry or copy and paste a link to it on your Facebook page, then come back here and comment that you shared it. (In a separate comment from #1, so each comment counts as one entry.)

3. Visit our store in Farmers Branch just north of Dallas this month. Each visit gets you one entry – be sure to fill out the entry form in the store.

4. Add this item: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/mogi.html (Monthly Giveaway) to your cart with any online order and get one entry.

I was not compensated in any way for this review/giveaway. All opinions are my own, and I paid for the giveaway item myself, just because you all are awesome and deserve awesome giveaways.

August Giveaway

Congratulations to Megan K who won our July giveaway!  Megan, you can come pick up your prize any Tuesday 10-2 or Saturday 11-3.

Our August giveaway was selected specifically for this month.  Mosquitoes are bad this time of year and it’s important to wear protective clothing or bug spray and to try to avoid being outside near standing water and at dawn and dusk.  When we were kids, mosquito protection was more for comfort than anything else – I remember the near-nightly ritual of dotting all our bites with calamine lotion to stop the itching.  But with the arrival of West Nile Virus, protecting your kids from mosquito bites is now a health concern as well.  But also of concern is what is IN the bug spray you are putting all over your child, especially little ones that still put everything in their mouths.

Image

We are giving a way a bottle of CJ’s Bug Banisher (retail 14.95) See what CJ’s has to say about this great product: “We use a combination of witchhazel, citronella, peppermint, neem, lavender and tea tree essential oils among other natural ingredients to keep those bugs away. Our testers found this formula to be very effective, even in the buggiest of climates at dusk! Try it for yourself…and say goodbye to yet another ‘mainstream’ chemical-laden product!”

I can tell you this, it really doesn’t smell bad.  (Ask me how I know, go on, ask.  Well okay, I’ll tell you.)  I know this because we left a bottle out on the kitchen counter and while my parents were watching our kids, the 8 year old (or the 6 year old, they’re not telling) sprayed it all over.  When we came back we kept wondering what that smell was, because it smelled like my mom had cleaned the kitchen top to bottom using essential oils.  Now, my mom has been known to sneak in some stealth cleaning while visiting, but she doesn’t know where we keep our essential oils so we were really confused.  Finally we saw the half empty bottle of CJ’s Bug Banisher and got a confession from the kids.  So yeah, not yucky smelling.

Image

We’re also including two PlanetWise snack bags/sandwich bags. (Retail 7.99 each) These reusable bags are made of food-safe materials and cute prints.  They velcro closed to keep food fresh.  We have switched to all reusable materials for packing our kids lunches and just like cloth diapers, we appreciate both the cost savings and the good feeling we get from not throwing away a bunch of trash every single day.

Three ways to enter:

1. Enter in-store.  You can get one entry every time you visit!

2. Enter online.  Add “Monthly Giveaway” to every order this month (it’s 1 cent, couldn’t figure out how to make it free.)

3. Enter on the blog.  Comment and tell us who introduced you to cloth diapering.  How did you first find out about it?  (And if it was a friend who introduced you, why not return the favor and introduce them to our blog?)

July Giveaway

First, congratulations to SimplySarahJ, your name was drawn to win the Undercover Mama nursing tank.  Please email us at admin@babiesbottomsandmore.com before Saturday morning, July 7) to claim your prize, let us know what size you wear and your first, second, and third color preferences.  (Normally you have a day to contact us but it’s a holiday.)

Now to spill the beans on July’s giveaway.  I said on Facebook it was going to be two new products, that I am currently using on John Paul, and literally cannot keep in stock.  Well.  It’s a Wolbybug one-size cover and a 6-pack of Tiny Tush organic flatfold diapers.

Image

New:The Wolbybug cover is new.  The Tiny Tush flats are actually not a new product, but I *thought* they had discontinued them and only recently found out, to my great excitement, that they were not discontinued but just moved to a different section of their website!  These are gorgeous, gorgeous flats.  About 30-40% larger than other flats, and with a thicker, more substantial weave, the organic cotton is buttery soft and smooth.  As with all flats, they unfold to a single layer making washing and drying a snap.  They are also so absorbent that I have been pad-folding them and using two of them in a Wolbybug cover OVERNIGHT with no leaks.

Image

Currently Using: Those of you who have talked to me know that we’ve got one kid in full-time diapers but two more in cloth at night.  I wash all their cloth together.  And someone I think is carrying some form of yeast, so we’ve been battling rashes.  My plan was to start washing on the Sanitary cycle and use bleach with each wash until I could clear up the rashes and figure out who is carrying it, but I was wary of ruining my nice AIO and fitted bamboo diapers.  Well, on the day our shipment of organic flats arrived, our washer also started throwing off an error code and quit working.  The temptation was too great.  I took a dozen flats for myself and thought I might be having my very own Flats Handwashing Challenge a month late.  Luckily for me, my husband removed the sock (!) from the drain filter and the washer is now working again, but I decided I’d rather put the flats through the sanitary/bleach cycles since there is no elastic to get ruined on them.  I’ve been pad folding them into thick rectangles and tucking them into the flaps on the Wolbybug cover.  The back elastic really makes a difference!  I have four covers all pre-stuffed so putting it on is just like using an AIO.  When I change him, I dump the dirty flat in the diaper pail and if the cover is still clean I just tuck a new already-folded flat into the flaps and put it back in the changing table drawer for next time.  Super easy!  Since I usually wash diapers at night, I haven’t gotten a chance to try hang-drying them outside yet, but I’m excited to see our lower electric bill this month since they really only take 20-25 minutes to dry in my dryer instead of the 50 minutes my other favorite diaper does, the BumGenius Elemental.

Image

You can see how big these flats are – they’re sitting on one!

Literally Cannot Keep In Stock: I wasn’t sure how well these Tiny Tush flats would sell.  They are $36.95 per dozen, while the Osocozy flats are only $9.98 per 6-pack, so about $20 per dozen.  After the dozen that I took for personal use, I had one dozen left, so I decided to prep them and sell them individually so people could try one before shelling out over $35 for a whole dozen.  That was Saturday morning.  That afternoon, an expectant couple came in and wanted to look at all the different types of cloth diapers.  I was excited to show them these new flats so I grabbed a clean one out of John Paul’s changing table to show them.  After comparing it with the Osocozy flats, they decided they loved the larger, thicker, softer organic flats and wanted to buy my last dozen.  Unfortunately they were still in the washing machine being prepped, so God bless ’em, this couple walked out with one dozen sopping wet Tiny Tush organic flat diapers!  Not to worry, I have another few dozen on their way and they will be here by this Saturday’s open hours.  We’ll be selling them in dozens but also individually, already prepped, for $3 each.

Here is a Wolbybug cover with a pad folded Tiny Tush flat in it.

To Enter:

1. Visit our store this month and fill out an entry form.  One entry form per visit, visit as many times as you’d like1

2. Place an online order and add the “Monthly Giveaway” to your cart.  It will charge you 1 cent because it won’t let me list an item for $0.  (If that’s a problem and you would like the 1 cent refunded, please pay for your order with Paypal and send an email asking for the 1 cent refund, we’re happy to oblige.)

3. Comment here and tell us… what is your favorite STYLE of cloth diaper – Flatfold, Prefold, Contour, Fitted, Pocket, All-in-one, or All-in-two – and why? Normally I LOVE my AIO’s because they are SO easy but lately I have really been feeling the flats love!

June’s Monthly Giveaway

Congratulations to Bobbie Dotson who won the Babykicks Deluxe Pocket Diaper from the May giveaway!  For June we have one of our most beloved products, the Undercover Mama.

Part nursing tank, part nursing shirt, the Undercover Mama has quite obviously been invented by a real breastfeeding mom.  It’s basically a tube top that comes up higher in the front and attaches – either with the clips or with the stretchy loops – to your nursing bra.  So when you unclip your bra to fold the cup down and nurse, the Undercover Mama comes down with it.  When you wear it under another shirt (or a cute cardigan), it makes any shirt a nursing shirt.  Just pull up the top layer (your shirt), pull down the inner layer (the Undercover Mama) and you can nurse while your belly and sides are completely covered.

Two other uses I have found for the Undercover Mama are for pregnancy and for modesty.  When I was 9 months pregnant, in January, most maternity shirts were not long enough to go all the way around my very pregnant belly, and it was distinctly uncomfortable to feel a cold draft on my middle!  The Undercover Mamas were long enough though that they could pull all the way down, keeping me warm and adding a cute layered look.  Also, I frequently will layer a camisole under a shirt with a low neckline for modesty.  The problem is that the camisole always starts to kind of sag down by the end of the day (gosh, I don’t know why, what with all the little kids in my house pulling on and twisting my clothes!) and so by about 3 pm the cami isn’t covering much up.  The Undercover Mama, though, because it attaches to my bra straps, is held close to my body by those same straps, which are MADE to be pretty heavy-duty, not-getting-stretched-out straps.  Then I’m not afraid to bend over like I am with a regular cami.

The winner will get an Undercover Mama in their choice of in-stock size AND color (black, white, cream, brown, hot pink, or gray, value $24.95).  If you don’t win, or don’t want to wait till July to find out if you won, you can get your own you can stop by our store any Tuesday 10-2 or Saturday 11-3, or click on this link to buy from our website: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/undercover-mama-nursing-tank.html

Three Ways To Enter:

1. Stop by the store and fill out an entry form. You can enter every time you visit this month!

2. Add the item “Monthly Giveaway” to your cart with any online order this month.

3. Comment here and tell me what breastfeeding accessory needs to be invented.  Chocolate-scented nipple cream?  The perfect breastmilk-spitup stain remover?  A perfectly breathable nursing cover?  What do you wish you had?  (I know mine: a self-filling giant water bottle!)

Oh and by the way I figure I should let y’all know that we are not compensated in any way for these giveaways.  Sometimes companies will donate items for the giveaway, other times, like this month’s giveaway, this is just a product that we really, really like and have decided to give away out of our own pocket.

March Giveaway

Congratulations to Jaquelyn who commented on our February giveaway entry for winning the PlanetWise nursing cover!  March’s giveaway is ALSO a PlanetWise item having to do with feeding babies, but not a nursing cover.  It’s a Bag Your Snack Stuff gift set!  The winner will get a set of 2 reusable snack bags (1 large and 1 small), a reusable sandwich wrap, and a set of 4 cloth napkins, all in a fun owl print.

Snack bags are

  • FDA Food Safe Material
  • PVC, BPA, Phthalate, Latex and Lead Free
  • CPSIA Compliant

Napkins are

  • Sold in sets of four, two-sided napkins
  • Coordinating prints to match your favorite Snack Bags!
  • Unfolded Dimensions: 12″x12″

We love the PlanetWise napkins so much, they have replaced paper napkins in our house.  I just toss them in with whatever load of laundry I’m doing that day.  They’re small enough (and fun enough prints) that my kids ages 8, 6, and 3 will fold them while I’m folding the rest of the laundry.  We have also become entirely waste-free for packed lunches.  I got some plastic “bento boxes” (really just cheap tupperware thingys) from Ikea that are the perfect size for a sandwich and a little bit of trail mix or pretzels next to the sandwich.  This goes with a sippy cup or thermos, a piece of fruit, and/or other food in a reusable snack bag into our canvas lunch sacks.  I love the canvas sacks because they fold completely flat for easy storage (important when you have 6 people’s lunch bags to store!) and they are completely WASHABLE so even if the sippy cup spills milk, it’s not doomed to stink forever!  (Stay tuned… we hope to have these amazing bags in our store soon!)

To Enter:

1. Come by the store and fill out an entry slip.  You can enter each time you visit during the month of March.

2. Add the “Monthly Giveaway” (for 1 cent because I can’t make it charge $0) to your cart with any online purchase this month.

3. Comment here with one change either that you HAVE made in the past year or that you WILL make this year to reduce waste in your life.

We’ll pick the winner on or around April 1.  Have fun!

February Giveaway

In my head I was thinking I would wait to post about our Feb. giveaway until the January giveaway had been claimed.  To wrap up the other one before starting a new one.  Well, getting in touch with a winner is becoming harder than I thought, and we’re already well into Feb. so I’ll go ahead and spill the beans.

February’s giveaway is a PlanetWise Nursing Cover in the Espresso Bean print!  Planetwise, maker of the fabulous wet/dry bags and Best Bottom Diapers, now makes nursing covers as well.  They’re made in the style of Bebe au Lait covers with a stiff neckline that stands out from your chest so you can look down and see your baby while they are covered.  They also have a large pocket in the corner to store essentials like a burp cloth, pacifier, nipple cream, or bottle of water.

My favorite feature of this cover though is the matching zippered pouch that comes with it.  It keeps the cover nice and neat and crumb-free in the bottom of your diaper bag.

PlanetWise nursing cover in Espresso Bean

Three Ways To Enter:

1. Stop by the store and fill out an entry slip with your name and phone number or email address.

2. Add the “monthly giveaway” item to your cart with any online order.

3. Comment here:  If you’re feeling snarky tell me the best/funniest reponse you’ve ever heard or used to a negative comment about breastfeeding.  Or if you’re in a more positive mood you can share a positive comment you’ve gotten from someone about breastfeeding.  My favorite answer to the question, “How long will you be nursing you baby?” is “Oh, just about five more minutes now.”

PS: If you are entering by posting here, I highly recommend you click the box to be notified by email if anyone responds to your comment.  The winner will be announced on our Facebook page on or around March 1, but if the winner is a commenter here I will also respond to their comment to let them know they’ve won.  Several previous prizes have gone unclaimed because I never heard back from the winner – I’d hate for it to be you!

November Giveaway

Congratulations to our October winner, Rachel Koppa.  We left you a voice mail – please contact us to claim your prize!

November’s giveaway is going to be perfect for those Thanksgiving leftovers. It’s a BPA-free feeding set from ThinkBaby, and a snack bag from Itzy Ritzy – total value of $49.99!

ThinkBaby has an awesome philosophy. Instead of reformulating their products every time a new ingredient is shown to be toxic or have health risks, they start off by asking the question, “Do we know this ingredient is safe? And is it necessary?” Only if the answer to both questions is “YES” do they include it in their product.

The BPA-free feeding set contains a set of baby-sized utensils, a kid-size cup with handle, two different size bowls with lids, and a bento box. All but the utensils are lined with stainless steel and encased in BPA-free blue plastic. The lids are also blue so you can find them easily. The bento box has a snap-on lid that is actually watertight! I have used these before to pack small snacks for my younger two kiddos when we’re out running errands, or for packing my preschooler’s lunch. I LOVE not having to spend money on plastic baggies, not to mention the waste we’re saving.

I have to admit, the ItzyRitzy snack bags in our house often get used for things other than food. They are great for packing snacks in the car, but we also use them for mommy’s makeup, small toy storage, and trips to the store when the kids have saved their pennies from chores. They like to carry their own money to the dollar store but I don’t feel good about letting them have lots of small chokeable objects in their pockets, so we zip them up in these bags.

If you don’t win, or can’t wait to get these for yourself, you can also purchase them on our website here:http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/bpafrfeset.html (BPA free feeding set), and here: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/itrisnharesn.html (Itzy Ritzy snack bag)

Three Ways To Enter:

1. Visit our store from now until 11-30-11 and fill out an entry form. You can enter each time you visit!

2. Place an online order before 11-30-11 and add the Monthly Giveaway to your cart. (Monthly Giveaway is in the “For Mama and Just for Fun” section and also in the category tabs on the left. It will add .01 to your cart, I’m sorry I can’t figure out how to list an item for $0.)

3. Comment here and tell me your favorite kid-friendly healthy snack that you would pack in the snack bag or feeding set. We have four kids so I’m always up for new ideas! 

**Due to the size and weight of this item, winner will be given the option to pick up prize locally or asked to pay actual shipping costs, estimated at $7.  Thanks for understanding!

I can’t believe it, I’m on time for posting this! First of all, congratulations to Bre Taylor who won the mama cloth giveaway, and LaDonna Elms who won the breastfeeding package. Please email us at admin@babiesbottomsandmore.com before Monday morning to claim your prize.

Now for the October Giveaway. Thanks to the work-at-home-DAD behind EcoSprout, we have an EcoSprout gift pack to give away. It includes a medium size bag of EcoSprout detergent plus 2 trial size bags, a bottle of Bottom Spray, a tube of Bottom Balm, and a small travel-size tin of Bottom Balm. I’ll be sad to see it go – it has been making our store smell WONDERFUL these past few weeks!
